"Les Desmoiselles Elues 19, Six Veilances Pigmented," Oil on Canvas,
30" x 30"
We all assume many faces when presented with the challenges of life. Renee Fladen-Kamm's paintings are maps and diaries of states of being. Her current series of gridded paintings position various emotional states together, as an organized exploration of experience, through facial expression. Les Demoiselles Elues distills portraits of women to capture their revealing reactions to devastating news. Fladen-Kamm uses her imagination with the power and texture of paint to explore a variety of immediate responses. The paintings give one the impression of viewing 100 women as they each receive bad news. Although the portraits are of women the reactions are essentially humanistic and universal. Within the grid format the women are unified by comparison, but are in reality completely isolated in their experiences.
